XML Tools Plugin for Notepad++

Notepad++ in a Text Editor which allows you to work with the normal text file. You can use it to edit XML files using XML Tools Plugin. This libXML2-based plugin provides a small set of useful tools for editing XML.

XML Tools Plugin Installation

As mentioned above it is a plugin. You can install it using Notepad++ Plugin Manager. If you do not have a plugin manager in your Notepad++ installation, you can also manually install this XML Plugin.

First, let’s see installation using the plugin manager

This is preferred and recommended method as it eases the overall process. You do not have to download any plugin and copy files. Plugin manager takes care of everything. It connects to the latest repository, downloads, and installs the plugin. No manual action and inputs are required unless clicking on the Next button.

One warning here, before starting installation make sure to save all edited text file in Notepad++. As plugin installation restart Notepad++ and you may lose edited file if you have not enabled save on exit option.

Steps

1. Start Notepad++
2. Navigate to Plugins -> Plugins Manager -> Show plugin manager.
3. Search XML Tools plugin in the lists of all the available plugin.
4. Select the checkbox
5. Click the Install button.

It displays additional information about the plugin as well if you want to check. One point I would like to mention here if you get a popup saying plugin manager itself needs updates, so go ahead and update it first and then install XML Tools Plugin.

Manual Installation

Using plugin manager it is easy to install XML Tool Plugin, but if you do not have plugin manager, you can use manual method. In the manual method, you need to download the plugin and copy the files to the Notepad++ folder explained in details below.

This plugin is stored at the SourceForge online repository. Open this link. Here you will find multiple folders as per the version of the plugin.

We recommend to use the latest version, but if you want you can install an older version as well. Steps should be the same.

Click on Xml Tools 2.4.9 Unicode. You will find below .zip file for 32 bit and 64-bit version.

Choose x64 or x86 file depending on the Notepad++ version. Notepad++ is available in both 32 bit and 64 bit version. So you need to make to download proper plugin files, else it may not work.

x64 – Compatible with Notepad++ 64 bit
x86 – Compatible with Notepad++ 32 bit

Cannot load 64 bit plugin.

XMLTools.dll is not compatible with the current version of Notepad++

If you get above error that means you have installed 64 bit plugin with 32 bit Notepad++ installation. To resolve this issue, you need to install (x86) 32 bit plugin or install 64 but Notepad++.

2. Open Xml Tools 2.4.9.2 x86 Unicode folder
3. Copy XMLTools.dll file to npp plugin subfolder. In my case C:Program Files (x86)Notepad++plugins
4. Copy all the files under dependencies folder to npp main folder C:Program Files (x86)Notepad++
5. Start notepad++

That’s it. You have successfully installed the plugin.
